Toyota took the hybrid market by storm when they released the Toyota Prius in 1997. Ever since, Toyota has been leading the way in the green car revolution. Throughout the past two decades, other automakers have hopped aboard the eco-friendly bandwagon. Manufacturers like Honda, Nissan, Hyundai, and Kia all have their own hybrid cars – but it is Toyota that is leading in sales and customer satisfaction. In 2016, Toyota sold the most hybrid cars all around the world. According to Wards Auto, Toyota reports a 16 percent growth in hybrid-vehicle sales.
Toyota hybrid cars are more popular than ever!
When breaking down the sales of Toyota hybrid cars in 2016, the Toyota Prius lead the way. Last year, there were over 350,000 units sold. In second place, was the new Toyota Prius c with almost 200,000 units sold. These two green cars were followed by the Toyota RAV4 hybrid and the Toyota Yaris. In January, Toyota hit a milestone of over 10 million hybrids sold since the release of the Toyota Prius in the late 90’s.
Compared to the competition, Toyota is leaving them in the dust. For example, Honda reported a four percent decrease in hybrid vehicle sales this past year. Nissan sold significantly less hybrid vehicles, only reporting 475 units sold in the United States – all being Infiniti models.
Toyota also makes the most hybrid models! Buyers love to buy Toyota hybrid cars because they have so many options. Including Lexus models, Toyota offers 37 hybrids. Other automakers like Honda and Nissan offer fewer. Honda sells a total of 11 hybrid vehicles and Nissan sells five.
