Futuristic and four-wheel drive usually don’t seem to go together. However, Toyota is revolutionizing the impression of a four-wheel drive crossover with the emergence of this modern vehicle one week ago at the New York International Auto Show. Meet the Toyota FT-4X Concept—a rugged, four-wheel drive toolbox packed with unique functionalities without compromising on charisma.
Engaging, convenient, thoughtful—say hello to Toyota’s latest concept vehicle
Get ready to go with the Toyota FT-4X concept car. Getting away always seems appealing, and this Toyota car is ready to take on some adventures. With a combination of beefy tires and wide overfenders, the simplistic exterior gains an extra rugged edge. This concept vehicle is targeted toward millennial-aged professionals who are confined to city limits. Studies show that most millennials are fond of the outdoors, but are always stuck operating indoors. The casual and unplanned adventure is what this Toyota concept car is ready for.
Designed by Toyota’s CALTY Design Research, this 4-door 4WD crossover can take on any challenging road ahead—whether it’s paved or a little bit bumpy. The designers cleverly approached the styling process at the rear—from their research they found that explorers’ most cherished experiences during travels were at their vehicle’s tailgate. This concept car has a rear hatch for the books, but we’ll take a closer look at that later. A bold orange paint job inspired by an orange mountain-climbing carabiner perfectly encompasses the charming persona of this rugged ride.
This unique concept car has been described as a giant orange gearbox on wheels—but in the best way. The Toyota FT-4X showcases an array of nifty design elements and gimmicks, making it insanely convenient for handling any type of road trip. This concept vehicle features a variety of removable interior pieces; the arm-rest is also a North Face sleeping bag, the handlebars are also water bottles, and the dashboard is also a boom box. This car even has a GoPro Hero5 Session camera built into its driver-side rearview mirror.
The Multi-Hatch in the rear has the ability to open two ways: horizontally, Urban Mode and vertically, Outdoor Mode. Urban Mode is perfect for loading gear into the car, while Outdoor Mode opens the hatch upward creating a shelter from the elements. On the inside of the Multi-Hatch you’ll find two twin storage boxes—one cold and one warm—where you can stow away food to keep cool or blankets to keep warm. Speaking of storage, this concept car has plenty of space to keep all of the cargo you’ll need for an adventure.
